Private Tufting Studio Session

Private tufting sessions for 1-2 people.

One to one teaching at a time that suits you.

Whether you're a couple seeking a tailored workshop or an experienced tufter aiming to refine your technique, this private session is for you. Unleash your imagination, explore textures, and create a unique masterpiece.

How it works:

These sessions take place in my studio in Cliftonville. Margate Makers Studio is made up of an upholstery workshop in the front and Ellen Tufts Studio, shared with fashion brand Gloria Jane Royer, at the back. Private workshops in this space can accommodate 1-2 people. For private bookings of 3+ people please get in touch.

Day sessions are around 6 hours plus lunch and breaks. If you wish to have a custom duration, for example a half day/evening or a course spread over several weeks then please get in touch to discuss. Week days and weekends are available. If you have a specific date in mind, would like to check availability or visit the studio before purchasing then please send an email enquiry. Otherwise, Ellen will contact you after booking to arrange your session.

Overview:

These sessions follow the same format as the regular group one day tufting workshops. Students will learn the basics of how to use both loop and cut pile tufting guns, as well as different types of yarn and the other materials used in tufting. By the end of the workshop you will have created you own tufted textile artwork in the form of a mini rug or wall hanging (max size 65x65cm).

Ellen will contact participants prior to the workshop to discuss their design ideas and to give them a colour chart from which they can select the yarns they wish to use. Students can either take their piece away with them if they finish it or arrange for collection or delivery depending on what is most convenient.

If you wish to have a tailored private workshop for instance to create something different to the standard 65 x 65cm rug or wall hanging, please get in touch to arrange this directly.

Accessibility:

Tufting is a fairly physical craft! The guns weigh 1.4kg and require consistent pressure from both hands. You will be sat down and standing depending on which part of the frame you are working on. It is not advised for people with arthritis or back or shoulder injuries.

For neurodivergent, SEN or any other additional needs, please let Ellen know beforehand so she can make sure you are comfortable and the workshop is best suited for the individual.

Margate Makers Studio can get quite noisy from time to time. We usually have background music on throughout the day but you are welcome to bring headphones if this is more comfortable for you. If you have any other accessibility questions please do not hesitate to get in touch.

About the venue:

Margate Makers Studio is in the heart of Cliftonville in Margate, Kent. It's a 30 minute walk or 5 minute drive from Margate Train station and is directly opposite a bus stop which serves Thanet and Canterbury. There is free street parking on the side roads or paid marking on Northdown Road.

Trains to and from London are frequent and direct from Margate, taking as little as 90 minutes. Please let us know if you would like us to arrange a taxi pick up from the station. You have use of a fridge, microwave, kettle and toaster or there is an array of places on Northdown Road to get food and drinks. Just ask for recommendations!

BOOK NOW:

“Ellen’s tufting workshop was amazing. I had no experience of tufting, but Ellen showed us all how to hold, thread, and use the tufting guns. With a couple of test goes and after feeling confident to use the gun, we drew out our pieces and started. Ellen is a fantastic teacher and even showed me how to do some hand tufting. I have recommended Ellen’s tufting workshop to all my friends and family.”

“I haven't had a weekend where I felt so engaged in so long. Ellen created a super lovely space which had the perfect balance of independent creativity & support.”
